The use of information technology in public hospitals (PO) reduces the hospital onefficiencies and improve the quality and the safety of service delivery. The informational and social benefits of female leadership may represent an important source of creativity and innovation. We explore the contribution of the multifaceted characteristics of female leadership for innovation in terms of e-health finding that the multifaceted characteristics of female directors enable hospitals to successfully face the e-health challenge. Policy makers should pay attention to combine a higher participation of female in hospital leadership with a balanced gender distribution of middle managers. Proper normative actions should improve minimum background/expertise requirements for the recruitment of directors.
