Introduction: Human Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are non hematopoietic progenitor cells capable of differentiating into tissues such as bone and cartilage and for this reason they are increasingly being considered in Tissue Engineering strategies for regeneration of various organ/tissue. However, the signals required for their homing and recruitment to injured tissues remain unclear. Chemotaxis, has been implicated in many physiological phenomena such as wound healing and morphogenesis. One of the strategy of Tissue Engineering (TE) consists in recapitulating such phenomena. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to provide the bioactive signals in order to recruit specific cell types from the surroundings and instruct them to synthesize matrix according to a pre-determined scheme. In this work we have designed an experimental set up in order to assess the role of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) on the migratory behaviour of MSC in a 3D environment.
