In the book “On Ugliness”, Umberto Eco (Eco, 2011) affirms that the “distance” of time makes the idea of beauty (or of ugliness ) objective, because it can be identified with the ideas of the “dominant culture” of the age, i.e the culture that defines these ideas using words and images while the “taste” of the common man disappears with him. Already this fact represents a difference compared to contemporary age, because, even if we do not want it too, “contemporary beauty” has its arbiters among common people who, probably much more than in the past, want to participate.

Abstract
In the book “On Ugliness”, Umberto Eco (Eco, 2011) affirms that the “distance” of time makes the idea of beauty (or of ugliness ) objective, because it can be identified with the ideas of the “dominant culture” of the age, i.e the culture that defines these ideas using words and images while the “taste” of the common man disappears with him. Already this fact represents a difference compared to contemporary age, because, even if we do not want it too, “contemporary beauty” has its arbiters among common people who, probably much more than in the past, want to participate.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
