The aim of this paper is to evaluate the sustainability of the Social Security System for the Italian economy, by examining the current demographic situation and trends in Italy, as well as their consequences on welfare resources and the quality of life of its citizens. The data were collected from the INPS Data Bank “Open Data”, an online database providing information free of charge and free from licensing restrictions. These resources are shared among other important national institutes, such as ISTAT. The study, by implementing regression models, highlights how, in recent decades, the number of retired workers has grown faster than the number of new workers, leading to an increase in the financial resources required to sustain welfare services. Finally, the paper proposes some potential solutions to address or at least mitigate the negative effects associated with Italy's ageing population.
