Love as a Form of 'Bildung' in Sten Nadolny’s 'Die Entdeckung der Langsamkeit' Abstract: The paper emphasises the key role of the concept of Bildung in Sten Nadolny’s 1983 novel 'Die Entdeckung der Langsamkeit' ('The Discovery of Slowness'). Specifically, it focuses on the role of love in the protagonist’s development, and on the interplay between love and the cultural and economic context presented in the novel. Through an analysis of selected passages, the stages of the protagonist’s love life are reconstructed and examined in relation to the historical and political context in which Nadolny wrote the novel, as well as the 19th-century historical and cultural context in which the plot is set.
