Grimoaldo, un prisma per il VII secolo. Considerazioni conclusive

[IT] Il saggio propone alcune considerazioni conclusive del convegno internazionale dedicato a Grimoaldo (Cividale del Friuli, 2024), assumendo la figura del sovrano longobardo come prisma interpretativo attraverso cui rileggere il VII secolo. L’obiettivo non è soltanto quello di restituire una sintesi dei contributi presentati, ma di mettere in luce le principali linee di ricerca emerse e le loro implicazioni storiografiche. Attraverso il confronto tra fonti narrative, documentarie e materiali, il contributo evidenzia come le dinamiche del potere, le strategie di legittimazione e i processi di costruzione della memoria risultino strettamente intrecciati. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al rapporto tra narrazione storiografica e silenzi delle fonti, alla natura composita della regalità longobarda, alle trasformazioni delle strutture sociali ed economiche, nonché alle interazioni con il mondo bizantino e con gli spazi eurasiatici. Nel loro insieme, i saggi discussi delineano un VII secolo inteso non come fase di crisi o di transizione indistinta, ma come un contesto dinamico di riconfigurazione politica, culturale e territoriale. In questa prospettiva, Grimoaldo emerge come un osservatorio privilegiato per cogliere la pluralità delle forme del potere e dei processi identitari nell’Italia altomedievale, così come le modalità con cui la memoria longobarda è stata costruita e reinterpretata nella lunga durata. [EN] This paper offers concluding reflections on the international conference devoted to Grimoald, using the Lombard ruler as an interpretative prism through which to reassess the seventh century. Rather than merely summarizing the contributions presented, it highlights the main research lines that emerged from the conference and their broader historiographical implications. By bringing together narrative, documentary, and material sources, the study underscores the close interconnection between power dynamics, strategies of legitimation, and processes of memory construction. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between historiographical narratives and silences in the sources, the composite nature of Lombard kingship, the transformation of social and economic structures, and the interactions with the Byzantine world and wider Eurasian contexts. Taken together, the contributions discussed portray the seventh century not as a period of crisis or undifferentiated transition, but as a dynamic phase of political, cultural, and territorial reconfiguration. In this perspective, Grimoald emerges as a privileged vantage point for understanding the plurality of forms of power and identity formation in early medieval Italy, as well as the ways in which Lombard memory was constructed and reinterpreted over the long term.
