The essay considers the contents of some nineteenth-century utopias, focusing in particular on the writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman. With the aim of analysing the feminist imprint left by the American writer on the utopian novel, it seeks to give particular account of her battle to redefine the boundaries between public and private and to propose a definition of the concept of care as an appropriate reference point not only in the sphere of intimacy or domesticity, but also in the context of social and political relations.
