La prospettiva baltica: tipi e modelli di città monofunzionale in Estonia, Lettonia e Lituania

At the end of the Second World War, the three Baltic republics were occupied by the Soviet Union and forcibly annexed to the socialist bloc. The new condition was accompanied by an intense building season, dictated by the need to rebuild what was destroyed by the war but, and by the desire to transform, through architecture , the society of the three countries. Compared to other contexts, the Baltic experience has been the subject of less interest from specialist literature, which is perhaps due to the heterogeneity of the design approaches adopted, but also to the substantial inability of the proposed models in conditioning the ways of living an urban space dominated by ancient centers full of history. The contribution deals with the experience of Baltic monofunctional cities, from the Lithuanian triad of Visaginas, Elektrėnai and Naujoji Akmenė to the Latvian Salaspils and Aizkraukle and the Estonian Kohtla-Järve and Sillamäe, particularly interesting as they are close the emblematic case of Nowa Huta.
