The modern concept of urban poverty has established itself in England during the process of industrialization since the end of the Eighteenth century, and has evolved over time as a consequence of social and economic transformations. The chapter discusses both the changes that have characterized urban poverty in advanced industrial countries, from the original forms that have established themselves during the long period of industrial expansion and urban growth to the present day, and the contemporary reality in the countries of the Global South where the process of urbanization has been concentrated in recent decades and where new manifestations of poverty and new forms of resistance are observed.

Abstract

The modern concept of urban poverty has established itself in England during the process of industrialization since the end of the Eighteenth century, and has evolved over time as a consequence of social and economic transformations. The chapter discusses both the changes that have characterized urban poverty in advanced industrial countries, from the original forms that have established themselves during the long period of industrial expansion and urban growth to the present day, and the contemporary reality in the countries of the Global South where the process of urbanization has been concentrated in recent decades and where new manifestations of poverty and new forms of resistance are observed.
