The focus of this essay is on Carl Schmitt and the conservative revolution, based on the conviction that if we were to identify its origins, the bulk of Schmitt’s work is a product of the Weimar Republic—that is, of what served as a striking example of a normative system incapable of halting its own dissolution, even through the very legal norms that constitute it. There are countless points in the vast body of work produced by the jurist from Plettenberg where one could trace the reasons for this connection to his “own time.” However, if we focus specifically on the entanglement of the krisis, one speculative concept emerges as decisive: the state of exception.

Abstract

The focus of this essay is on Carl Schmitt and the conservative revolution, based on the conviction that if we were to identify its origins, the bulk of Schmitt’s work is a product of the Weimar Republic—that is, of what served as a striking example of a normative system incapable of halting its own dissolution, even through the very legal norms that constitute it. There are countless points in the vast body of work produced by the jurist from Plettenberg where one could trace the reasons for this connection to his “own time.” However, if we focus specifically on the entanglement of the krisis, one speculative concept emerges as decisive: the state of exception.
