The paper shows the capability of a geostatistical approach for the evaluation of the local seismic response by describing an application of the method for the city of Benevento. The geotechnical characterization of the Benevento subsoil was obtained by collecting existing data and performing specific investigations. Some em-pirical correlations were specially built to assign a shear wave velocity value to each geotechnical units of Benevento subsoil. All the available data were collected in a GIS environment. A geostatistical analysis was then performed to model the spatial variability of shear wave velocity and to predict Vs values in unknown location, while assessing the reliability of the prediction. Zonation was then based on EC8 site classification
