Our understanding of the dynamics of flow in open channels has significantly increased in recent years. This can largely be attributed to the collection of both experimental and field data, new computational tools, and new analysis techniques developed in mathematics and statistics, and coming together of seemingly disparate water and environment-related areas. A snapshot of these ideas is presented here.
