This study is a linguistic-pragmatic analysis of Blair's appeal to the people as it was covered by British dailies on 1 October 1997. The news reports aim at constructing consensus on Blair's project for Great Britain as a new and number one nation. Notions like the socio-economic status of the ideal reader and political sympathy of the newspaper appear to be put aside in favour of the pragmatic purpose of the communicative message.
