We briefly illustrate our non-perturbative analysis of the modified sine-Gordon equation $\varphi_{tt}-\varphi_{xx} + \sin\varphi=\delta-\alpha \varphi_t$ ($\alpha\ge 0,\delta\inR$) on the real axis ($x\!\in\!\b{R}$) and on the circle ($x\!\in\! S^1$), and its application to the Josephson effect in the theory of superconductors.
