The problem of the elastic equilibrium of thin-walled beams subjected to non-uniform torsion is discussed in order to highlight the assumptions and the approximations of the classical theory and specialize the theory of warping restrained torsion for ship hull, taking into consideration the effective longitudinal distribution of the applied external torque. An energy procedure, which takes into account the elastic behaviour of transverse bulkheads and torsion boxes, is presented.
