This paper examines some EFL materials for military personnel with regard to their communicative and functional aimsfrom a broad perspective, considering the didactic aspects but also the ideological implications of the English learning pathways designed for the armed forces. In addition, the STANAG 6001 guidelines and scoring system of language skills, issued by NATO and recognized at international level, has been paralleled with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in an attempt to identify specific language profiles for military officers.
