The indexes of activity, the microbiologic composition and the settling characteristics of deep shaft activated sludge have been examined and compared with data obtained using a conventional activated sludge plant. There were no significant differences between the two sets of data as the indexes of sludge activity. Microbiologic analyses revealed a ligh, healthy presence of Protozoa and the absence of filamentous species in deep shaft activated sludge. Lastly, deep shaft activated sludge presents better settling characteristics than does conventional activated sludge.

Abstract

The indexes of activity, the microbiologic composition and the settling characteristics of deep shaft activated sludge have been examined and compared with data obtained using a conventional activated sludge plant. There were no significant differences between the two sets of data as the indexes of sludge activity. Microbiologic analyses revealed a ligh, healthy presence of Protozoa and the absence of filamentous species in deep shaft activated sludge. Lastly, deep shaft activated sludge presents better settling characteristics than does conventional activated sludge.
