The advantages and disadvantages of solid-phase chemistry compared to “classical” solution phase chemistry – representing the most common strategies used to synthesize biomolecules – have been widely discussed in the scientific community and the solid phase methods are nowadays profitably applied in all areas of chemical research. From 1999 on, every year more than 1000 articles involving the use of solid supported reactions appear in the literature. From the data available on SciFinder, 1231 papers dealing with the solid phase synthesis have been published in 2009, including 206 patents. Articles appeared in 2009 have been reviewed and selected on the basis of their general impact and synthetic utility, and are here classified according to their major area of application.
