The modern definition of a commercial port must include effectiveness in terms of modernity, functionality and, not least, volume of traffic - both in terms of the number and type of ships which dock at the wharves and the levels of passenger and freight traffic - a logical consequence of position relative to national and international routes. The subject of this work is safety in the commercial and industrial port, understood not only as a complex working environment where the various workers are engaged in activities that are intrinsically hazardous, both from the point of view of accidents and that of occupational diseases, but also as an element of the urban system. It therefore becomes necessary to safeguard the inhabitants of neighbouring areas from possible harmful events connected with the handling of dangerous freight being loaded and unloaded at the port terminals.
