Background and aim: Obesity is a risk factor for both cardiovascular diseases and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Since GERD symptoms are often induced by food and by considering that acid suppressive therapy is associated with weight gain in GERD patients, it is reasonable to hypothesize that GERD may impact on patients dietary habits and affect the outcome of food related diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of GERD on hypertension, metabolic syndrome and ischemic cardiomiopathy in a large population of patients in a primary care setting.
