By means of a KBE system it is possible to assist gearbox design, so that a design team can speed up the process of retrieval and selection of the information related to the gearbox previously developed. Then, a KBE system can assist engineers on re-using the previous knowledge in order to improve a new gearbox design. A critical characteristic of a KBE system is the interface usability for the effectively reducing of the development time. In this paper, the authors propose an approach in order to improve the usability of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of this KBE system. Methods based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) have been used. A participatory test has been performed for evaluating the Usability Index (UI) of the GUI. Taking into account the data analysis some changes have been carried out and a new GUI release has been validated with new experimentations. Through the approach here described has been accomplished an increase of UI more than 70%.
