The paper deals with the hydro-mechanical behaviour observed in an unsaturated pyroclastic slope instrumented at Monteforte Irpino, in southern Italy. Suction measured at different depths for four years is presented and interpreted. According to the pattern of data, three different periods are detected: (i) a wet period from January to April; (ii) a dry period from May to September; (iii) an intermediate period from September to December. For each period the mean profile of data is identified and limit equilibrium analysis is performed by modelling the test site as an infinite slope.

Abstract

The paper deals with the hydro-mechanical behaviour observed in an unsaturated pyroclastic slope instrumented at Monteforte Irpino, in southern Italy. Suction measured at different depths for four years is presented and interpreted. According to the pattern of data, three different periods are detected: (i) a wet period from January to April; (ii) a dry period from May to September; (iii) an intermediate period from September to December. For each period the mean profile of data is identified and limit equilibrium analysis is performed by modelling the test site as an infinite slope.
