The survey of large tumuli in the eastern and western Mediterranean, including some graves in Central Europe, reveals many common points among these monuments, in part historically related, in part resulting from the adoption of similar solutions in different societies with the same cultural models. The idea of a funerary monumental landscape developed in the Near East and Anatolia and came to the West in the Orientalizing period.
