In the Letter on Humanim Heidegger recognies the necessity of an ethics, a bindind indication or clear rules valid as a reference point for the human being in his time. The need of a binding assignement, however, remeins in the background in comparison tot he need to reconsider how Dasein can stay in the truth of Being. The article attemps to show how the models on which Heidegger orients the formultaion of the category of existence play an essential role in Heidegger’s later understanding of ethics. In partucular, it shows how Heidegger assumes the central core of Luther’s theology of the cross; how Heidegger uses the practical philosophy of Aristotle, and how the influence of Luther and his theology upon Heidegger’s throught plays essential role for his conception of ethics
