Abstract

In contemporary nomadism the inhabited space is no longer a place anchored to the ground, stable. Its style involves essentialism, transportability and adaptability, it is in continuous motion. Once it was referred to as nomadic architecture, inspired by the Mongolian yurts, Gypsy caravans and Native American teepees. Today their appearance is completely different but there is still the desire to develop small transportable environments that respond to all the needs of the residents in a way that respects the environment and makes intelligent use of resources. Since the first decades of the 1900s, the theme of mobility has been widely dealt with by theoreticians and architects involved in the research of a new way of understanding the city and its architecture. Since the first decades of the 1900s, the theme of mobility has been widely dealt with by theoreticians and architects involved in the research of a new way of understanding the city and its architecture. These were experimenters of new languages and technologies that could respond to the changing needs of life. Historic examples and contemporay case studies of mobile architecture describe a preindustrial world not bound to place but possessed by an ideology of itinerant and nomadic responses to permanence. The most fascinating aspect of this is definitely the capability to modify places for a short term, improving the existing structure and reinterpreting its characteristics. This approach ignores the less valuable elements and, since the changes are reversible, it enters a kind of dialogue with the setting, making irreverent or tongue-in-cheek comments. This approach regenerates places in a sustainable manner, intervening on the urban fabric without exploiting its resources but, on the contrary, adding value to it. This approach stimulates new relational dynamics between cities, architectures, objects and individuals, and in so doing it often strongly affects the local economy. We are talking about contemporary projects, instantaneous domesticities, manifesto of a real reflection on the existing space and the characteristics of the interiors. These reversible, transportable, modifiable, adaptable architectures convey complex locational content with the added quality of responding not only to one place or specific moment but to an existential need of human beings to identify with their own habitat.
