Southern backwardness is a crucial issue in the historical and economic literature on the process of Italian economic development. The Southern Question (Questione Meridionale) has been the object of a long-lasting controversial debate throughout the history of unitary Italy, and it is still matter of discussion (Pescosolido 2017).
