The aim of our research is to analyse the definitions of the entry to vote in the dictionaries of the French language from the 17th to the 19th century, from Jean Nicot’s Thresor de la langue françoyse to Pierre Larousse’s Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe siècle, in order to trace its semantic evolution over the centuries. With this lexicographical excursus, we will illustrate the enrichment of the meaning of the verb to vote, through the analysis of definitions, examples and quotations given, presenting at the same time some remarks on the methodologies adopted by lexicographers in the writing the article about this word.
