The enclosure wall is investigated as a spatial device that marks a 'horizontal palimpsest' structuring the modern 'city of enclosures'. The asylum, as heterotopy, has often frozen parts of the city within the frame of its enclosures. The contribution investigates some interesting case studies - such as the P. Pini in Milan and the S. Maria della Pietà in Rome - where art, passing over/inside/through walls, variously exceeds/dematerializes/gives new meaning to limits and enclosures.
