The industrial heritage is inherently exposed to multiple phenomena of obsolescence. Following the disposal processes, these citadels, often enclosed, appear in the urban landscape as waste. And yet these urban fragments today represent great opportunities for the urban parts that surround them. On the basis of a critical description of seven international case studies carried out between 1994 and 2014, the contribution provides interpretative keys and design strategies that can guide the necessary future interventions aimed at producing places from these production sites. Productive landscape, urban enclosure, contemporary archaeology, residual waste, megastructure, container are some interpretations of these heritages that are proposed to have generated as many design strategies: renaturalisation, subtraction/saturation, inclusion, expansion, addition, filling.
