NoStraNa is an urban regeneration experiment applied to the city of Naples. Its core concept is that a top-down approach is not always the most suitable one for public space matters: in fact, in order for urban regeneration to be achieved, degraded space should, first of all, recover its function. This demands the citizens’ involvement. NoStraNa then explores new ways of sharing common spaces, in order to suggest good practices for using them. Its strategy is concretely implemented through periodically and temporarily occupying some squares of the ancient city centre to organise free-for-all leisure and sport activities. The project is realized thanks to the local community: sport federations and associations, supported by volunteers, organise the activities, while the costs are financed through local firms donations and crowd-funding campaigns. NoStraNa proposes a rather unusual way of using the squares, in order to show that by simply exploiting Naples existing urban heritage, and at no great expenses, it is still possible to build a sense of place and to produce relevant social benefits.
