The study analyzed the morphology of the Italian Mediterranean Buffalo (IMB) to improve animal welfare and longevity, focusing on three limb traits: hock angle, heel height, and fetlock strength. A locomotion score on a scale from 1 to 50 was developed to assess limb functionality. The results showed significant correlations between the locomotion score and limb traits, while correlations with overall structure were less relevant. Defects such as overgrown claws (OGC) and corkscrew claws (CC) reduced the locomotion score. The analysis model explained 51% of the variability in the score. The locomotion score proved useful for evaluating limb functionality, integrating information on claw defects and limb traits.

Abstract
| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
