Triboelectricity is a physical phenomenon to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. This paper gives a brief introduction to the topic and to the physical principles that drive the phenomenon. Afterward, it is proposed an explorative literature analysis to point out the interest of scientific community, main current research paths and trending topics involving triboelectricity. A particular attention is devoted to mechanical engineering field with a main focus on energy harvesting applications.
