In preparation for a new edition of Philodemus, On Gods book I, this paper, in its first part, provides an overview of the state of research on PHerc. 26 to clarify the status of both the edited and unedited portions of the scroll. In the second part, I address the issue of Philodemus’ «false friends» as identified by Diels and Kleve in cornice 1. By provinding new readings in pezzi 1, 2, and 3, I refute the previous hypothesis of a polemic by Philodemus against the philosophers Dionysius, Echecles, and Eudoxus.
