The aim of this essay is to define the category of Dämonisch in Friedrich Meinecke’s works. In order to do so, a critical reading of Die Idee der Staatsräson in der neueren Geschichte (1924) and of Die deutsche Katastrophe (1946) will be proposed, show- ing how the concept, first introduced to describe the naturalistic element of raison d’état, has then been used to describe Hitler’s demoniacal personality.
