This paper, based on an ethnography conducted in Morocco, analyzes the relationship between diabetes and food, focusing on the symbolic and material centrality of the last one in the social scene, including in relation to islam. The emergence of a biomedical knowledge that with its scientific-nutritional perspective “separates” food from the community texture and from its multiple symbolic, religious and social meanings, has a major impact on people with diabetes, colliding with local food representations and customs, as occurs in ramaḍān time. During this important phase of community life diabetologists, patients, and family members navigate a complex space where the social dimensions of nutrition are crucial as the ethnographic material discussed demonstrates.

Abstract
This paper, based on an ethnography conducted in Morocco, analyzes the relationship between diabetes and food, focusing on the symbolic and material centrality of the last one in the social scene, including in relation to islam. The emergence of a biomedical knowledge that with its scientific-nutritional perspective “separates” food from the community texture and from its multiple symbolic, religious and social meanings, has a major impact on people with diabetes, colliding with local food representations and customs, as occurs in ramaḍān time. During this important phase of community life diabetologists, patients, and family members navigate a complex space where the social dimensions of nutrition are crucial as the ethnographic material discussed demonstrates.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
