The examination of topotypes of Cytheropteron rarum G.W. Mueller, 1894, from the Recent of the Gulf of Naples, has lead to a re-evaluation of its generic status and its assignment to Semicytherura Wagner, 1957.Mueller's name cannot be used, due to its homonymy with Semicytherura rara (G.W. Mueller, 1894). Consequently, a new name, Semicytherura janinea nom. nov., is given and the species is re-illustrated.
