We report on studies of the vibrational-translational relaxation time of CHClF2 (freon-22) molecules, carried out by using an interferometric technique. The relaxation time has been analysed under experimental conditions of particular interest for the process of isotopic selective dissociation of freon-22, namely, at relatively high laser fluxes and gas pressures. We have also characterized the dependence of the relaxation time on the exciting CO2 laser wavelength, and on the pressure of a buffer gas. Finally, the results are compared with our previous findings on freon-12 (CF2Cl2) and SF6.

Abstract

We report on studies of the vibrational-translational relaxation time of CHClF2 (freon-22) molecules, carried out by using an interferometric technique. The relaxation time has been analysed under experimental conditions of particular interest for the process of isotopic selective dissociation of freon-22, namely, at relatively high laser fluxes and gas pressures. We have also characterized the dependence of the relaxation time on the exciting CO2 laser wavelength, and on the pressure of a buffer gas. Finally, the results are compared with our previous findings on freon-12 (CF2Cl2) and SF6.
