The interaction of the 3 clupeine fractions, YI, YII, Z, and salmine fraction AI with mononucleotides was examd. by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results obtained are interpreted in terms of electrostatic interactions between pos. arginine guanidinyl groups and neg. nucleotide phosphates. In addn., clupeine fraction YI and salmine fraction AI exhibit a more specific interaction with guanine and adenine nucleotides, which leads to the formation of large aggregates in soln. The strength of interaction between clupeine YI or salmine AI with mononucleotides follows the order: 5'-dTMP .simeq. 5'-dCMP >> 5'-dAMP < 5'-dGMP .simeq. 5'-GMP.
