Intravenous immunoglobulins and mucous membrane pemphigoid

This pilot study reports our clinical experience with IVIgs as an effective therapeutic option in treating 6 patients with severe MMP. Following specific inclusion criteria, all patients responded to IVIg therapy, and they experienced the resolution of all oral and extraoral lesions with a significantly higher quality of life. For ocular lesions, IVIg was able to control active and progressive disease and to arrest scarring. Our data indicate that when current guidelines are followed, IVIg therapy can be considered in MMP patients heavily pre-treated with steroids and immunosuppressants. It was able to control the activity of the disease rapidly and, at the same time, produce a very effective clinical response. Further confirmation of safety and efficacy in larger prospective series is desiderable.
