Eastern European countries have attracted large FDI in the last decade, so, accordingly to the theoretical literature, they should receive significant gains from inward foreign direct investment in terms of economic growth. However, often it is neglected the fact that the benefits of FDI vary greatly across sectors: primary, manufacturing and services. This paper, starting from a critical review of recent studies, proposes an empirical analysis of the role of FDI, broken down by sectors, in promoting growth in 12 Eastern European Countries (EEC) for the period 1999-2006.

Abstract

Eastern European countries have attracted large FDI in the last decade, so, accordingly to the theoretical literature, they should receive significant gains from inward foreign direct investment in terms of economic growth. However, often it is neglected the fact that the benefits of FDI vary greatly across sectors: primary, manufacturing and services. This paper, starting from a critical review of recent studies, proposes an empirical analysis of the role of FDI, broken down by sectors, in promoting growth in 12 Eastern European Countries (EEC) for the period 1999-2006.
