The toxicity of many chemicals is due to their metabolic activation by CYP2E1 and other P450 enzymes. The assessment of an individual's CYP2E1 phenotype and genotype, therefore, is important to assess his/her susceptibility to many occupational and environmental pollutants. The article discusses the factors involved in CYP2E1 variability including polymorphism.
