Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff), an Ambrosia beetle (Curculionidae, Scolytinae, Xyleborini) of economic importance, native from Asia, has been collected for the first time from Europe, on different hosts sampled in Campania (Southern Italy) during 2011. New host records and preliminary biological data of the xyleborine in Italy and a revised key to the species of the genus Xylosandrus occurring in Europe are presented. Further specific investigations are needed to establish the effective distribution and the impact of X. compactus to forest, fruit and ornamental trees in Italy.
