A novel 9,11-secosterol, 3-beta,6-alpha-dihydroxy-9-oxo-9,11-seco-5-alpha-cholest-7-en-11-al (1), has been isolated from the marine sponge Spongia officinalis and its structure deduced by analysis of spectral data including H-1 NMR COSY and H-1-C-13 correlation NMR experiments. The structure of 1 was confirmed by synthesis starting from 7-dehydrocholesterol.

Abstract
