The sterols of S. mucronatus (Phylum Porifera, order Astrophorida, family Stellettidae) and R. sarai (order Haplosclerida, family Haliclonidae) were isolated by argentic chromatog. and reversed-phase HPLC and characterized by mass spectroscopy and 1H-NMR. The sterols from R. sarai and S. mucronatus were qual. similar, but the quant. content of some components was different. Sponges contained mainly Δ5 sterols accompanied by 5α-stanols. A small quantity of 24-ethylcholesta-5,7-dien-3β-ol was present in R. sarai

Abstract
The sterols of S. mucronatus (Phylum Porifera, order Astrophorida, family Stellettidae) and R. sarai (order Haplosclerida, family Haliclonidae) were isolated by argentic chromatog. and reversed-phase HPLC and characterized by mass spectroscopy and 1H-NMR. The sterols from R. sarai and S. mucronatus were qual. similar, but the quant. content of some components was different. Sponges contained mainly Δ5 sterols accompanied by 5α-stanols.
