The discovery of a new gene with unknown functions and encoding a protein with novel characteristics left us with the puzzling question of a suitable name for it. The name cripto [1] was chosen to indicate that the main characteristic of this novel gene was the di¤culty in ¢nding its function. Nearly 10 years passed before we started to have a clue to some of the possible functions of cripto. This review focuses on the di¡erent studies that have ¢nally provided these clues.
