In recent years international research has been increasingly focused on developing approaches and methods aimed at saving energy in urban areas. Nevertheless the energy challenge has been tackled with a sectorial approach that does not take the urban dimension into account. The multidimensional nature of the energy issue, combined with the complexity typical of urban systems, should make us re/ ect on the approach to use, in order to ensure the environmental and energy sustainability of urban systems. From this point of view, the systemic approach that characterizes the study of the interaction between the transformations of the territory, urban planning, the distribution of activities, the government of mobility and user habits, aimed at saving energy at the urban scale, represents the peculiarity of the Smart Energy Master (SEM) project, which seeks to develop a model for the energy-e+ cient governance of the territory.
