Abstract
The reduction of boundaries and the ever-growing integration of economies, industries, markets, cultures around the world, i. e. globalisation - often interpreted as a synonym of Americanization - have accelerated the rate at which communities are mixing, thus increasing the need for a “lingua franca” of world society. Nowadays English is the undisputed language of global communities who have often adapted in into varieties called “New Englishes”. From the seventeenth century onwards, the expansion and, later on, the predominant position of English language have been variously due to socio-political, cultural and economic factors ranging from British colonialism, the importance of the Industrial revolution taking place in England for the first time or to the current supremacy of America all over the world. The new technologies, all developed in the USA, also altered the ways of public entertainment (mainly music, cinema and advertising), and served as a thrust of the English language and culture.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
