In Italy after the endorsement of Law n.56/2014 the debate about the constitution of Metropolitan City, as government authority of the metropolitan areas, has been reopened. At the same time, in several urban contexts, the definition of a new development process is arising and it is strongly focused on the use and the application of new technologies in different areas of the urban system. Such new development process is aimed at increasing life quality and local communities wellness and at promoting the creation of a more efficient and more sustainable urban system, as well as at making it more competitive. Specifically, it is related to the paradigm of the Smart City and it requires the involvement of stakeholders - public administration, universities and enterprises - whose interaction is the ideal platform to increase innovation and knowledge, key aspects of the Smart City. This chapter is related to the case study of the Metropolitan city of Florence and analyzes the relationship between Metropolitan city and Smart City in order to verify if and how the adoption of such paradigm could contribute to define the governance of these large and complex urban systems. The roadmap towards the Smart City undertaken by the Metropolitan city of Florence is very different from that of other Italian cities. Indeed, the Smart City is an opportunity to face the critical issues of the area, but also to strengthen the sectors in which the city appears stronger. At the same time, considering the new metropolitan organization, it can also represent a suitable tool by which to define the new metropolitan governance.

Abstract
At the same time, considering the new metropolitan organization, it can also represent a suitable tool by which to define the new metropolitan governance.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
