The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of day/night temperatures during the phase of flower initiation on growth and flowering of Phalaenopsis. The experiment was carried out in Naples, in a commercial heated glasshouse. Three thermal regimes (day/night), 23/21 °C, 21/19 °C and 19/17 °C were compared, using plants of the hybrid ‘Premium’ grown in pot. The growth rate of Phalaenopsis plants was very slow during the whole growing cycle. The time for the appearance of flower stem was shorter and the rate of the stem elongation was faster under 23/21 °C regime. In 21/19 °C regime, the flower buds appeared 127 days after the beginning of thermal treatments and the anthesis started 34 days later, while flowering was hastened by the higher temperatures and delayed by the lower ones. Commercial quality of flowering plants was higher in the medium temperature. Under higher temperature, the shorter time to flower was associated with the reduction of the main characteristics of flower stem.
