At the beginning of De bello Neapolitano, the historical Pontano’s work, the humanist reconstructs the Medieval History of Southern Italy, with particular emphasis on Norman conquest; then he outlines a picture of Italy in the aftermath of Alfonso the Magnanimous’ death. The paper highlights the cultural and historical context in which Pontano composed and revised his historical work, and it analyzes the work’s debut under the ideological aspect throught the contribution of other contemporary literary documents
